COURSE INFORMATION

In this course we will use the Internet as a host and inspiration for art making. We will explore how to use the internet as a medium and muse to produce and exhibit interactive, participatory, and multimedia works of art. In the course we will learn about other artists engaged in this type of work and will study the historical context from which Web Art has emerged. We will learn about the conceptual implications of Web Art as well as the technical tools available to us. We will also learn about how the internet and technology can open up a wide range of new possibilities when it comes to reimagining traditional art forms such as typography, painting, sculpture, animations, and more!


COURSE OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of this course is to equip you with an understanding of web development principles and the technical skills required to build websites and web art. Upon the completion of the Web Art course students will: Have knowledge about the history and evolution of the web from Web 1.0 to Web 3.0 Understand how Web Art as a medium relates to other traditional mediums Know about the artists and collectives creating Web Art Understand how technology (AI/ML, blockchain, software…) is changing the art landscape Understand how platforms lend themselves to hosting internet art (including "non-conventional" platforms such as Google Maps and Craigslist) Appreciate the interactive, participatory, and multimedia possibilities of Web Art
